Club Atlético Platense is an Argentine sports club founded in 1906 and based in the city of La Plata, Buenos Aires Province. Although many activities are hosted by the club, Platense is mostly known for its football team, which currently plays in the Primera B Nacional, the second division of Argentina's football league system. The club was founded on 18 April 1906 as a result of a merger between two clubs Estrella del Oeste and Aviación.[2]

The first official match took place on 12 May 1906 with a 4–1 victory over home team Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy. In 1917 they were promoted to second division but lasted only one season before being relegated back down again. In 1931 they won their first title after defeating Huracán de Corrientes 1–0 in their final game to win promotion back into Primera División.[1][2]

In 1922–23 Platense finished sixth with 33 points; however they did not qualify for another tournament because they had used their quota on other teams from Argentina such as Estudiantes de Buenos Aires or Club Atlético Platense itself. This fact could have been seen as a curse by many supporters because this marked the beginning of what would become known as “the golden age” at club level with strong teams such as River Plate winning four championships between 1927–30 and 1932-34 while other clubs like Gimnasia y Esgrima LP took part in tournaments during these years too (1931).
In 1990 Avelino Gattás left his position as president of Platense.[4] He was replaced by Héctor Grondona, who remains at his post. The "Calamar" (squid), which had been hanging from the rafters of the old stadium for decades, was put in a museum and hasn't been brought back after La Plata's Estadio Ciudad de La Plata opened.

Conclusion
The club has won the Primera B Nacional championship four times, most recently in 2016. In international play, Platense has played in World Cup qualifying tournaments every year since 1938 except for 1942 and 1946, when Argentina was not permitted to play in international tournaments due to its participation in World War II.
